Lately I’ve been finding it hard to get moving first thing in the morning. Even more so now that the weather is cooler and our heat isn’t turned on QUITE yet. Working for myself has been really great. But it has been a challenge to adopt a new, intentional morning routine that balances peace and productivity. So I’m writing this post to keep me accountable for my new routine!
I’m starting with baby steps. I don’t expect to go from 0 to 100; that just doesn’t seem sustainable even in the short-term.
Here’s what my current (old) mornings looked like: wake up at 7:30AM, lay in bed scrolling on IG/TikTok and replying to comments and messages until about 8:30AM. Then I’d get up, make my way downstairs for some coffee and a muffin while I scroll some more online. After that, play with Tofu and complete my morning skincare. Around 9-10am I’d get to work on client projects and cruise through my day from there.
It’s not a HORRIBLE morning routine in the sense that I’m able to start my day on a relaxed note. When I worked a corporate job, I literally went straight from bed to being on level 200% anxious productivity. Most of the time I didn’t even eat breakfast because I would become consumed so fast. Now and moving forward, I’m just trying to balance being relaxed with also setting good intentions for the day.
I’ll start my journey to a better morning by just swapping out some of my AM scrolling time with a bit of guided meditation. I did this today and it was great! I spent 30 minutes sitting on my cozy rug in the sunlight, sipping my coffee and reading my motivation book You Are A Badass Everyday. This was great because I was able to do some light stretching too. After I flipped through a few pages, I turned on a guided meditation on my TV/YouTube. The video we watched was so effective, it even had Tofu relaxing… he ended up plopping down in my lap and staring peacefully out the window 😂 let me remind you, it is SO hard to get that pooch to calm down!
I felt really calm and clear-minded this morning after making this small change. It was great going into my day with a clutter-free mind. I swear it helped me focus better on my projects during the day too!
I’m going to continue to do this everyday with hopes that I can continue to build upon this as it becomes second-nature. Eventually, I’d also like to look into journaling and some evening meditation/wind down. Some of you shared some really great thoughts on your journey with journaling/meditation on my IG poll earlier today, so I’m very excited to try that next.
I’ll keep you updated on the progress as I continue. I hope that I’m able continue seeing added benefits (curious to see how I sleep tonight after having such a productive and focused day).
Thank you so much for reading! 🙂
