Before I begin any more home renovation projects, I’ve been thinking back to 2019 when we moved into our old 1920s colonial home. We have made so much progress to each little corner of this place, painting nearly every wall and renovating room by room by ourselves in between our busy 8-5s. My favorite renovation so far was our bathroom remodel (I recapped that project here!)
If I could move in all over again, I would do SO many things differently. So many of my friends and family have been moving around lately, so I thought I would compile all my tips into one blog post in hopes that it might help some of you out too!
Tip 1: Purge Before Packing
Start by packing up items that you use less often, and purge anything you can! During my move, I focused on packing smaller decor pieces and kitchen supplies first, and sifted out items to toss or donate as I packed. This really reduces the amount of items you need to move. It’s also a great way to make room for exciting new purchases once you’re in your new space. Just try to donate or sell items if you can to reduce the amount you send to landfills.
Tip 2: Hire A Professional Moving Company
Do as I say, not as I do! In the past we would always enlist the help of friends and family to help us move. However, over the years we have accumulated so much stuff (lawn equipment, holiday decorations, pet supplies, the list goes on) that we definitely will need to hire professionals next time. Plus, it’s so much more fun to invite your friends over for cocktails once your space is set up, rather than tiring them out with a full day of moving boxes 😉
Definitely look into using Moving Solutions for your next move! They offer so many services including local and long-distance moving, piano moving, & even hot tub moving. If you’re someone with a commercial space, they can even help out with that, too! Not only can they help you with packing and moving, but they also offer others services such as shrink wrapping, storage solutions, furniture disassembly & reassembly, and even home staging! They are a one-stop shop for all things move-related. Using a professional service like Moving Solutions will really be a game changer in any move.
Tip 3: Use Good Boxes
I learned this lesson the hard way! Even if you’re not traveling far, your boxes will get shuffled around so much and the last thing you want is the bottom of a box to rip off while you’re moving it. Using good quality boxes will help keep all of your items safe. For the months leading up to a move, I usually start stockpiling good boxes and other packing materials like newspaper, foam, and packing peanuts. As an avid Amazon shopper, it’s usually not too hard to accumulate plenty of boxes over the course of a few months! However, you can always check with friends, local businesses, or even purchase boxes from home improvement stores like Home Depot or Lowe’s if you need to find some in a pinch. You can even get special garment boxes that have a metal rod at the top, so you can leave all your clothes on the hanger and hang from the metal rod! Just make sure to label all boxes too, so you can easily prioritize unpacking.
Tip 4: Clean Your New Space First
Hopefully your new place is spotless before you move anything in, but ours was not! When we were touring our house before buying it, there were several other potential buyers walking around the house and property at the same time, leaving our floors pretty dirty. Once we were preparing to move in, I spent an afternoon in the empty house wiping down all the floors, cabinet drawers, and surfaces so that we had a clean slate. Of course we had to clean again after having everything moved in, but it really helped us start with a clean canvas and get any nooks that would later become covered up with furniture.
Tip 5: Plan Your Housewarming Party!
The best part of it all! Once your professional movers have left and you’ve had a chance to unbox all of your things, host a party so your friends and family can check out your new home! Sometimes you get lucky and you’re gifted bottles of wine as a housewarming present. Pop those bottles and toast to your new place!
That’s it! Do you have any other tips you’ve learned? I’d love to hear about your moving experiences in the comments!
