How To Style Hair In A Flirty Updo

November 17, 2021

I had so much fun shooting these photos yesterday, and I think part of the reason was this new flirty hairdo I was rocking! I mentioned in my most recent Instagram post that it might also have been all the endorphins from running up 7 flights of stairs, lol.

Here’s how I achieved that flirty, fun hairdo…

I started with second-day hair. I find that my hair looks the best when I wash & dry it in the evening and then style it the next morning. A little bit of natural oil helps my style last much longer and reduces frizz!

I used my curling wand to throw in some quick, loose curls. I always wrap my hair away from my face in somewhat larger sections. I know a lot of hair pros recommend curling in 1-inch sections, but I honestly don’t have the time or patience for that for everyday hair. So I typically grab 3-ish inch sections to curl, which ends up being about 10 total curls around my whole head.

Then, I take a wide-tooth comb and brush through my hair a few times. I don’t even wait for it to cool off or “set” because my hair typically holds curl relatively well.

Then, it was time for the star of the show… my mini claw clip! I think this is really what gave my updo so much volume and shape. I sectioned off the top half of my hair, starting right above my ears and traced my fingers up to the crown of my head.

Once I had a nice little section, I twisted it around a few times (just like I would if I were putting my entire head of hair in a claw clip). I then lifted the twisted section forward, doubling the first couple of inches closest to my roots over on itself. I clipped in the claw clip! Basically, think about if you were going to put a standard full head of hair into a claw clip, but only grab half of your hair!

I clipped it in right at the crown of my head. After that, I just played with it for a few seconds, pulling the hair around the clip to cover it up. That’s it!

It was super easy and will give you a really flirty and fun look! I obviously wore this with a more sporty outfit, but I think it would look darling with a little dress or skirt outfit too!
